Working in partnership

Royal Bank of Scotland Group

In August 2007, Fairbridge De Cymru was taken over by 29 volunteers – workers from RBS, from two offices in Britsol an Cardiff who came together to revamp the centre.

The volunteers were split into three teams that made improvements to the front of the centre, painted hallways and created a separate IT suite and art rooms.

The day was designed to help teambuilding for the company, and had positive results for RBS, Fairbridge and the young people who use its services.

Claire Hemsley, PDO, Fairbridge:

“This day was great because every activity undertaken benefitted the young peopel and staff who work here every day.

The young people got a lot out of it. They made a buffet for the RBS staff and chatted to them about their experiences at Fairbridge. Cooking for them put them in an organising role and altered their perceptions of people who work in the business world. Cooking also enhanced their independent living skills.

For the RBS staff it was great because it got them in contact with the local community. A lot of them had heard about us, but they didn’t know what we did.It also raised our profile and allowed us to get people to join our other events and to get our message across.”

Louise Mains, RBS:

“RBS has had an ongoing affiliation with Fairbridge for a number of years giving both financial support and raising the profile of the charity.

The day created a fantastic 'team spirit' and enabled employees to come together who wouldn't normally interact on a day-to-day basis.

This has helped building relations between our two departments and share the success of what has been achieved.

At the end of the day John Dyer and the team gave us a certificate and as you walk into our office you'll see them placed on our desks with pride.

In our team alone this has helped raise the profile of charitable work that RBS is involved in and positively enforced the message that we can all make a difference.”
