Fairbridge in Dundee approached Home School Support Services (HSSS) with a view to delivering a programme to those young people most at risk of disengaging from mainstream education. A joint partnership was developed between Fairbridge and the Education Department of Dundee City Council and a service level agreement (non financial) drawn up with both parties agreeing on proposed activities. A series of aims and outcomes were negotiated and a reporting relationship was established enabling staff from Fairbridge, HSSS and schools to work collaboratively.
Over the last year, 86 young people at risk of disengagement and exclusion from mainstream education were inducted onto the Fairbridge U16 Project, with 73 starting and 57 completing the four-week course. The main objective for the intervention was to re-engage the young people back into education and develop their personal and social skills. Through challenging behaviour and supporting the development of new skills, the aims were to modify young people’s behaviour and attitudes in the classroom, school and wider community.
“Fairbridge enhances the alternative provision. It has been a very positive addition and if it disappeared tomorrow, it would leave a hole.” Principal Teacher Guidance
“I think that Fairbridge benefited young people a lot. It provided focus and a sense of achievement for young people during a difficult time.” Behaviour Support Teacher
