Fairbridge Kennington receives one in eight of its under 16’s from Lambeth Pupil Referral unit, which helps to re-engage students who have been, or are on the verge of exclusion.
Jennifer Davies, Partnership and Development Officer, Kennington:
“We work with young people from the referral unit if they have issues with motivation, lack of self esteem. We treat them in the same way we treat any young person and aim to retain or reengage them in education.
The young people that the unit refers often have behavioural problems, are involved with petty crime, and have anger management problems. Rather than put them on a limited timetable, we encourage them to come to the centre two days a week, address their issues. and if they are still at school, to their place of education for the other two days.
Last year over 83 per cent of under 16’s attending the centre went back or continued in education, so it is clearly working.”
External Endorsements:
“I have enjoyed working alongside you, Jamal and David on our key players, as an outside agency, Fairbridge has been a good community partner” Vargini Ledchumykanthan (Head of Pastoral Support Bow Boys’ School)
“Why is it that our society finds it so very difficult to acknowledge the difficulties that some young people experience? Thankfully organisations such as yours exist to help!!” Mick Cosh (Outreach Teacher, CEC Islington)
