Carmarthenshire Youth Offending Service

One of Fairbridge Swansea’s key referrers is the Carmarthenshire Youth Offending Service. The service works with young people aged 10 to 17 who have been in trouble with the Police and its aim is to prevent them from re-offending. Often this is done by getting young people into training, and it uses Fairbridge to help it do this.

Louise Chilvers, Education officer:

“My job is to get young people into education or training, but some of them don’t have the skills to get onto a training scheme because they have low self esteem and the inability to work in groups.

Fairbridge is good for young people in this situation as it seems to be good for their self esteem and teaches them how to work with others.

It is also a good way of getting them back into education. Overall their attitude towards school is very negative but they don’t see Fairbridge as a school, although it is one step closer to it. They seem to like it and I actually get a lot of young people referred to us who ask about it because their friends have gone and told them that it was good.

The staff are great. They are friendly and keep me up to date. If there are any problems they get straight on the phone. There are other similar services but they are exclusive, unlike Fairbridge, which anyone can access.”
