Working in partnership

In January 2007, Fairbridge Swansea and NatWest came together for the innovative ‘Swansea Hilton’ course where young people from Fairbridge got the chance to learn the skills needed to run a busy Bed & Breakfast in Swansea and NatWest provided the guests to experience their skills at the end of it all.

David Heald, Manager, Fairbridge Swansea

“Employability is one of the key life skill areas that we look to develop at Fairbridge. Given that South West Wales has such a thriving tourist economy, the kind of skills that can be learnt in a B&B can be invaluable for any young person – not just turning down the sheets, but working with customers, catering and handling money are all important. In the ‘Swansea Hilton’ course, a group of young people rose to that challenge and gained important skills and also Food Hygeine Certificates and credits towards and ASDAN award that will be important qualifications for their future.

The impact of the course was immense. Of those who took part, all have now gone on to gain employment, training or taken up volunteering opportunities. Two even got involved in catering for a Fairbridge Conference. However, the greatest praise of all came from the NatWest guests who came for the final weekend of the course. Maybe they were terrified about their health, safety and diet being turned over to a group of young people with no formal training, but there were no complaints at the end. For the young people, working with ‘real’ people was a buzz and a big boost to their confidence.”

Jo Bishop, NatWest’s Senior Branch Manager for Swansea City Centre, added:

“NatWest has had an affiliation with Fairbridge Swansea since its inception in 2005 giving both financial support and raising the profile of the charity.

Fairbridge has an excellent track record in working with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to enable them to realise their true potential. We were delighted to support the course and it also gave us the opportunity to engage our customers and for them to learn more about the excellent work that Fairbridge Swansea is undertaking locally.

Our association with Fairbridge Swansea has helped raise the profile of charitable work that NatWest and its staff are involved in and positively enforced the message that we can all make a difference.”
