So what are you – a local company, a potential volunteer or maybe someone interested in becoming a committee member? There’s every chance that your local Fairbridge centre needs you.
There is so much going on at Fairbridge – so why not get involved. Your support will make a big difference!
Since 2009, Fairbridge West has been working with ethical clothing company howies. Staff from the howies Bristol shop have helped us in a number of ways from promoting our events, giving us free goody bags to taking part in our recent “Box Kart Challenge”.
Ella Pollock, Partnership Development Assistant Fairbridge West:
“howies is a company with a strong interest in environmental and social responsibility, their business ethic is to put something of value back into their local community and this has led to our partnership with the Bristol shop.
howies staff helped us to promote our first Christmas Concert in December 2009, and are supporting us in our upcoming involvement with this year’s Bristol Half Marathon. One of their staff members is even joining the 50 brave people who will be running the 13.5 miles to raise money for Fairbridge West on the day!
Most recently staff from the Bristol shop took part in our first flagship course, the “Box Kart Challenge”. Over the course of 2 days howies staff worked with Fairbridge West staff and young people to design, build and test their own box karts leading up to a spectacular race finale. This was filmed to create our annual Fairbridge West film which premiered at the BFI Imax cinema in London.
As well as all of the support that howies have given us with our fundraising events their staff involvement has been brilliant for our young people, giving them the chance to work with young professionals who are enthusiastic and passionate about their jobs.
Fairbridge West uses outdoor activities to challenge and build the confidence of young people and we are always looking for new and creative ways to incorporate these things into our programme. As howies staff are famous for their love of nature, outdoor pursuits and environmental sustainability we are excited about how we can work with them to make our courses even better.”
Matt Hacker, Store Manager, howies Bristol:
“Having visited Fairbridge West and seen some of the amazing work they do, I knew howies should try to support the charity in some way. We try to engage with local businesses and projects in Bristol and have found working with Fairbridge one of our most rewarding ventures.
howies promotes “doing stuff”, especially outdoors, and discovering that many of the young people who go to Fairbridge West have never even been outside of Bristol, was a real eye-opener.
When we decided to do battle in a box car race, building the carts from scratch; we were amazed at how the young people developed over the two days. When they arrived, some lacked confidence and seemed apprehensive about the project. Having spent two days in our teams planning, building and racing our carts we noticed a distinct change in attitude.
We know from the sports we do that getting outside with some good people getting muddy and having fun can develop your confidence and have a really positive impact on your life.
We look forward to developing relationships and having more outdoor adventures in the future with the young people from Fairbridge.”
